Remote Access to Library Resources: VPN

Learn how to get access to Advocate Health - Midwest Library resources when working remotely, or off the institutional network.

VPN Advantages/Disadvantages

Many Advocate Health - Midwest teammates have access to an institutional virtual private network (VPN).The preferred VPN for Advocate Health - Midwest teammates is Zscaler, and this will eventually replace Workspace and Citrix AnyConnect VPN with Duo.

When you are connected to the VPN, your computer will connect to library resources as if you are on-site at a work location.

Advantages:

  • VPN is a very good option as it provides reliable, seamless access to Library resources once you are connected to the VPN.
  • It simulates an on-site experience.
  • Allows access to virtually all resources including ones that are not owned by the Library such as Lexicomp and Dynamic Health.

Disadvantages:

  • You may not have the VPN software on your device or credentials to access the VPN

VPN Instructions

Access to the VPN is granted by HIT. If you need VPN access, you or your leader should request it in ServiceNow.

For instructions for accessing VPN and to learn more about Zscaler, view this information in the ServiceNow portal.
