Creating Persistent Links to Online Resources: Overview

Learn how to create persistent links to online journal articles and books found in Advocate Health - Midwest Library's online resources

Purpose of this Guide

This guide will help you create persistent/durable links to the online journal articles and books you find within Advocate Health - Midwest Library's databases.

Persistent links, also known as durable, stable, direct, or permalinks, are permanent links to individual articles, eBooks, or journals that can then be shared via email or posted to SharePoint. Adding a LibLynx proxy prefix to a persistent link means that any Advocate Health - Midwest teammate can get access to subscription articles whether or not they are on the Advocate Health - Midwest network.

Creating persistent links can be a challenge, and we are here to help!

General Information about Persistent Links

Any time you share an article or other online resource with colleagues, it's best to share a link to the resource instead of sending a file or pdf. This will insure copyright compliance. Creating a persistent link will allow you to have a stable link to the resource that is accessible any time. You will need access to the Advocate Health - Midwest network, VPN, or LibLynx to create these links.

Many publishers have persistent URLs and allow users to copy the address in the URL bar at the top of the browser. But, within some databases, links in the top address bar are not permanent and might not work if you try to use them again. For example, Ovid and EBSCOhost do not allow this, instead they let you generate persistent links that are called jumpstarts or permalinks.

Publishers and Databases that have Persistent URLs

In some databases, the URL in the browser address bar is a persistent link and those can be used directly (see example below).

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)   R2 Digital Library
Cochrane Library Springer Medicine

Adding the LibLynx Proxy Prefix

When creating persistent links while in an Advocate Health - Midwest facility or connected to the VPN (WorkSpace or Cisco AnyConnect), a proxy prefix can be added to the beginning of the URL link so that the article will be accessible for those accessing it from off-site. Users will just need to log in with their Advocate Health - Midwest credentials. Simply add this prefix to the front of the URL to allow the link to work from off campus: https://liblynxgateway.com/aah?url=

EXAMPLE: https://liblynxgateway.com/aah?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/#!/content/journal/1-s2.0-S126236362030104X

*NOTE: If you are creating links remotely, while already signed into our LibLynx proxy, our databases will automatically embed our proxy information in front of or within the permalink. You do NOT need to add a proxy prefix to this link. Here is an example:
https://search-ebscohost-com.aah.proxy.liblynxgateway.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=c8h&AN=149971316&site=ehost-live

When is a link not a persistent link?

There are some ways to tell if a link is not a persistent link. If you see the words "temp" or "session" in the URL, it is likely NOT a persistent link.
