Systematic Review Process: Data Extraction

This guide will assist teammates and researchers at Advocate Health - Midwest who are seeking information on and instructions for conducting systematic reviews.

Data Extraction

In this step of the review process researchers will need to read the full text of each article identified for inclusion in the review and extract the pertinent data using a standardized data extraction/coding form. The data extraction form should be as long or as short as necessary and can be coded for computer analysis if desired.

To complete this step, you will need at least one team member to go through and extract all relevant data from each included study and one team member to review the data they have extracted.

We recommend consulting the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions which includes a section describing data extraction and collecting data in chapter 5.
