Continuing medical education (CME), continuing education (CE) and maintenance of certification (MOC) options available from Advocate Health - Midwest Library resources

Information and Accreditation

The Medical Letter provides a self-study CME program based on the content of their newsletter, The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics. The Medical Letter is accredited by both the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians and the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education (ACPE) for providing continuing pharmacy education.

Continuing education credit can be claimed from multiple organizations:

  • ACCME -  A maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ can be claimed.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
  • ABIM MOC - Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 2 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit. Your participation information will be shared with ABIM through PARS.
  • AAFP  - The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) deemed the CE program acceptable for AAFP credit during the term of  01/01/2021 to 12/31/2021. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
  • AAPA - The American Academy of Physician Assistants has deemed the CE program compliant with AAPA CME Criteria for the term of 5/2/2021 to 12/31/2022. This activity is designated for 52 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Physician Assistants should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
  • ACPE - Participants can claim a a maximum of 2.0 hour(s) of knowledge-based continuing education credit (0.2 CEU).

Claim Credit

The Medical Letter provides access to CME exams both on the website and on the app. In order to access this feature, you must register for CME by following these steps:

  1. Go to secure.medicalletter.org.
  2. Click on the "Continuing Education" link on the Medical Letter's page.
  3. Enter your Advocate Health - Midwest email address and enroll, if needed.

Once enrolled, you can access CME exams. A score of 70% or greater is required to pass the exam. For ACPE credit, CPE Monitor (NABP.net) is the only official source of credit/transcripts. Certificates/statements of credit will be emailed to those who submit and pass the exam.
