Inherent bias is unavoidable in large language models (LLMs) and it can produce misinformation and have implications on healthcare and research.
The corpus of scholarly literature that AI research applications have access to may be missing content from publishers who don’t allow their information to be accessed by AI tools, and the full text of articles is not always available so the AI application may only be looking at title and/or abstract of the references and not seeing important points.
We recognize that there are areas where using AI tools in scholarly research and writing may be helpful, for instance in helping to make the text of an article more readable, as a way to generate research ideas, and as a first pass in a literature search.
