November is Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage month is celebrated nationwide throughout November to honor the culture and contributions of Native Americans.  In recognition of this month, the Library is promoting its resources which can help providers better understand the health needs of Native Americans. 

Did you know?

Earlier this year the US Department of the Interior recognized tribal lands in Illinois for the first time.  Portions of the Shab-en-ay Reservation land have been placed into a trust  for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.  

The Chicago metropolitan area is the third-largest urban Native American population in the country with over 100 tribal nations represented. The American Indian Center of Chicago (AIC) was the first urban Indian Center in the United States in 1953.  

Wisconsin has 11 federally recognized native American communities: 

  • Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians
  • Forest County Potawatomi
  • Ho-Chunk Nation
  • Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
  • Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
  • Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin 
  • Oneida Nation
  • Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indian
  • Mole Lake (Sokaogon Chippewa Community) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa 
  • St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin
  • Stockbridge-Munsee Community of Mohican Indians
