BMJ Case Reports is an important educational resource offering a high volume of cases in all disciplines so that healthcare professionals, researchers and others can easily find clinically important information on common and rare conditions. It is indexed in Medline as well as other major databases. All articles are peer reviewed and copy edited before publication. BMJ Case Reports is not an edition or supplement of the BMJ.
A particular advantage of case reports is the possibility of quick publication for residents who may not have the time to conduct research. And for many new authors, writing a case report is a valuable learning opportunity to develop skills in how to write scientific communications. Case reports also have a role in medical education and can inspire additional scholarship.
BMJ Case Reports has a unique business model where authors and readers become Fellows. The Advocate Aurora Library will run a pilot program from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 when we will maintain an institutional Fellowship for BMJ Case Reports. All Advocate Aurora sites will have read access to BMJ Case Reports. But, only faculty, staff, and others at the five Advocate Aurora teaching hospitals and residents affiliated with programs at those teaching hospitals may submit case reports they have authored without having to become an individual Fellow.
Under this institutional Fellowship model, eligible individuals at Advocate Aurora will not have to pay the individual Fellowship fee in order to submit an unlimited number of case reports. There is only a cost if the submitter chooses the option to have their published case report accessible to anyone (Open Access). These costs cannot be funded by the Library and would have to be funded by the submitter or their department.
The Advocate Aurora Library will evaluate the pilot program continuously and decide about continuation of the institutional Fellowship considering use and financial sustainability. Your feedback will be valuable to inform our decision.
Email the Library at aah-library@aah.org with questions or feedback or to obtain the fellowship number.
