Information and Accreditation

UpToDate is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. 

Continuing education credit and credit towards maintenance of education program can be claimed from multiple organizations including*:

  • AMA - UpToDate's Internet point-of-care activity for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
  • AAFP - The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) deemed UpToDate acceptable for up to 20.00 Point of Care AAFP Prescribed credits during the term of 10/31/2020 to 10/30/2021. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
  • AAP - The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) deemed this continuing medical education activity acceptable for a maximum of 50.00 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • AAPA/NCCPA - According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), PAs may claim a maximum of 0.5 Category I credit per Internet point-of-care learning cycle. NCCPA accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society.
  • AANP - The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) has approved UpToDate as a provider of nurse practitioner continuing education. For each hour of participation with the program, NPs can claim 1.0 contact hour. UpToDate automatically tracks the time you spend using the service.
  • ACEP - UpToDate is approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) for a maximum of 30 hour(s) of ACEP Category I credit.
  • ACOG - The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AGOG) has assigned up to 0.50 cognate credit per Internet point-of-care learning cycle. There is no limit to the number of Internet point-of-care learning cycles that physicians may complete using UpToDate.
  • AOA - UpToDate has been approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) for unlimited AOA Category 2-B credit.
  • AMCB - The Certificate Maintenance Program of the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) and AANP NP contact hours, both of which UpToDate offers, to satisfy the 20 contact hours requirement. 
  • PNCB - The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board's (PNCB) recertification program accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) and AANP NP contact hours, both of which UpToDate offers, to count toward the annual requirement of 15 contact hours.

Creating an Account

Steps to create an UpToDate account:

  1. While on an Advocate Aurora networked computer, go to UpToDate.
  2. Click "Register" and enter all the requested information, using your Advocate Aurora email address.
  3. You will receive a verification email from UpToDate that also qualifies you for remote access.

Claim Credit

Earn and Redeem CE/CME credits by:

  1. Go to uptodate.com and login.
  2. Search for a clinical question in UpToDate.
  3. UpToDate will automatically track the questions in the CME or CE tab.
  4. Select the tab to view all your redeemable credits organized by month.
  5. View searches and identify how you applied information found in UpToDate towards your practice.
  6. Repeat this process for all CME credits you'd like to submit.
  7. Click "Save."
  8. Select the months with completed credits you'd wish to submit.
  9. Click "Continue" to view/print certificate.
